Summer in Athens is loud, hot, and crowded. Winter is calm but grey some days. Autumn sits right in the middle, and a lot of people who know the city well (Athenians included) will tell you it’s the best time of the year.
The heat breaks in September. The sea, having soaked up sun all summer, is at its warmest. The cruise crowds start thinning out, the light turns golden, and the whole city seems to exhale. You can spend a whole day walking between ancient sites without planning your route around shade, then finish with a swim and dinner on a terrace that’s still warm at 10 PM.

The reality: Early September can still hit 33-35°C on hot days, so it feels like summer. From mid-September the mornings get fresher and the evenings pleasant. October is the one most people fall for: warm afternoons, cool nights, the occasional short storm. November brings the first proper rain, but it usually comes in heavy bursts of an hour or two, and then the sky clears.
Daylight changes a lot. Sunset moves from about 7:40 PM in early September to about 6:15 PM by late October. Then the clocks go back on Sunday, October 25, 2026, and sunset suddenly lands around 5:15 PM. Plan sunset activities with that in mind.
Athens in Autumn: Month by Month#
September: Summer Without the Suffering#
Weather: Hot early, lovely by the end. 23-29°C. Crowds: Still busy, especially at the Acropolis and in Plaka. Prices: Close to high season, 10-15% below August. Best for: Beach + sightseeing combos, island trips, open-air everything.
September gives you the best sea temperatures of the year, long days, and everything still fully open: beach bars, open-air cinemas, rooftop pools, island ferries on full schedules. The difference from August is that you can actually be outside at 2 PM without regretting it.
The catch is that September is no secret. Book the Acropolis early, reserve popular rooftop restaurants, and don’t leave hotels to the last minute.
October: The Sweet Spot#
Weather: Warm days, cool evenings. 16-24°C. Crowds: Moderate early, low after mid-month. Prices: Dropping, typically 20-35% below peak. Best for: Everything. Seriously.
If you can only pick one autumn month, pick October. It’s comfortable for long walking days, the sea is still swimmable (22°C is warmer than the Aegean in June), and the whole city feels more relaxed. Restaurants get less frantic, and the light around the Parthenon in late afternoon is beautiful.
The first half of October still has summer energy. After mid-month, beach bars and island services wind down, and the city goes back to its local rhythm.
November: Quiet, Cheap, and Cozy#
Weather: Mild, with rain. 12-19°C. Crowds: Low. Prices: Low, often 40-50% below summer. Best for: Museums, food, budget trips, the Athens Marathon.
November is when Athens goes back to belonging to Athenians. The Acropolis switches to winter hours (8 AM - 5 PM from November 1), chestnut sellers set up on street corners, tavernas start serving slow-cooked stews again, and hotel prices drop sharply. You’ll need an umbrella a couple of days a week, but you’ll also get plenty of crisp, sunny days that are perfect for walking.

1. The Sea Is at Its Warmest#
This surprises a lot of people: the sea around Athens is warmer in September and October than in May or June. You get proper swimming weather without proper summer heat. Sightseeing in the morning, a swim at Vouliagmeni in the afternoon, and dinner by the water is a very realistic autumn day.
2. Comfortable Sightseeing Weather#
Athens is a walking city with most of its highlights on hills of marble. At 38°C, that’s hard work. At 24°C, it’s a pleasure. Autumn is when you can do the Acropolis, the Ancient Agora, and a neighborhood walk in one day without melting.

Autumn is harvest time in Greece: grapes in September, then pomegranates, quinces, figs, and chestnuts, and the olive harvest starting in November. The food shifts with it (more on that below), and it’s a great time for a wine tour.

The Acropolis is open all year, and autumn gives you the best combination of comfortable temperatures and decent daylight. The €30 ticket is the same price in every season.
Autumn hours: Roughly 8 AM to 7 PM in September, with closing time gradually moving earlier through October. Winter hours (8 AM - 5 PM) start November 1. Check the official Hellenic Heritage site before you go, because exact closing times shift through the season.
Best timing:
- September and early October: Be at the gate at 8 AM. Cruise-ship groups arrive from about 9:30 AM.
- Late October and November: Mid-morning or early afternoon is fine. Crowds are much lighter.
Acropolis, Parthenon & Acropolis Museum Guided Tour
